Eye Examinations
Why?
Many people only think to visit their optometrist if they are having difficulty seeing well. However, even if you feel you can see perfectly well, eye examinations are important in order to check the health of your eyes.
Both adults and children should have regular checks, and those who drive should also ensure that they meet the required visual standard.
Children are normally examined in practice from around the age of four. However, if you are concerned there may be a problem with your child’s eyes before then, we will be happy to see them.
Many people are entitled to a free NHS eye examination. The following list of exemptions from fees may be helpful, and our staff will be pleased to advise you:
- All children under 16 years of age
- All in full-time education under 19 years of age
- All over 60 years of age
- Registered blind/partially sighted
- Those with diabetes
- Glaucoma sufferers
- Aged 40+ and a direct relative of a glaucoma sufferer
- Those requiring Complex Prescriptions
- Those people receiving
- Income Support/Employment and Support Allowance
-
Jobseekers Allowance/Guaranteed Pension Credit
- Tax Credits/HC2 certificates
What Can Be Detected?
Many ocular conditions, such as glaucoma, do not give any symptoms until their later stages. Detection and referral to an hospital eye department at an early stage can help to prevent progression. Other common conditions, such as cataract and macular degeneration, can be monitored and managed appropriately.
